JFCS Weekly Insider – May 14
Over the last couple of weeks, Samost JFCS has been BUSY!!
It began with the Jewish Business Network’s Mitzvah Magic Event where we were bombarded with donations for the Food Pantry. JFCS also sponsored another successful Cafe Europa. (One of the gentleman, Sam, shared that he counts on his outings from Merchantville to the JCC/JFCS for Cafe Europa as they bring him much happiness since losing his wife a few months back.) A group of invested political figures met with a team from our Senior Services Department to discuss opportunities to serve Veterans. This is a direct off-shoot from the political breakfast held in April and a great example of excellence in follow up.
We are moving ahead with our FY14 Budget and the lay committee is working in tandem with us to develop an aspirational yet realistic budget for next year. Many thanks to everyone who is participating in this process. We are also looking ahead to our summer retreat, and thank all who have agreed to serve on our Summer Staff Retreat Committee: Chairs: Suzanne Fox and Lisa Simpson and Committee Members: Lauren Butler, Lisa Silverman and Nina Staiman Consultant: Rena Essrog.
Hundreds also attended our Annual Meeting and celebrated many achievements including our well deserved staff recognition awards: Lisa Silverman – the Sondra Berman Memorial Award, Barbara Abrams – Kovod Award, and Suzanne Fox – Pioneer Award. Join us in welcoming our 5 new board members to JFCS as well – Debbie Ravitz, Jason Wolfe, Michael Weinberg, Missy Wayne, and Sue Meklinsky and new Advisory Board Member Ellen Ferreira.
It is because of the hard work of all who attended, staff, board, volunteers – that JFCS is so well regarded and why so many of our partners and friends from throughout the region look forward to celebrating with us each year. Of particular note was the educational piece at the pre-reception featuring Nadine Halevy, Suzie Abrams, Barbara Abrams, Natan Schneider-Ganz and our special needs clients; the beautiful table settings; the delicious refreshments; and the heartwarming presentations. In addition, we can be very proud of our award winners and milestone celebrations. Rosalee Samuels for 30 years of dedicated service to JFCS. WOW!
Our Counseling Department is interviewing for a clinician to run our now monthly addictions and recovery Shabbat havurah. Due to the generous funding of a new donor, this important program will occur monthly rather than bi-annually. Board development is a key focus of our leadership. A new board members’ mentoring program is in place that will include site visits and an evening orientation. In addition, a board retreat is in the works for the fall!
Finally, Mazel Tov to Barbara Abrams and the entire Special Needs Department for being the AJFCA’s 2013 Trailblazer Award recipient for the Soups and Sweets program!
Stay tuned for more exciting news from the JFCS headquarters!
